Understanding the Charts of Genius

by:
Nancy R. Fenn

The Chart of Genius show the following characteristics:

^ The chart is unbalanced (this is descriptive, not judgmental: I mean a lot of planets in one hemisphere vs. another).
^ There is a lack of planets in one element or quality
^ The 3rd house is overstressed or afflicted 3rd house (the mind)
^ Malefic in the 3rd (Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto)
^ The ruler of the 3rd is in close aspect to one or more malefic(s)
^ The 10th house (career, public recognition, fame) is often afflicted
^ A close, stressful connection between the 3rd and the 10th; i.e., the way this person's mind works interferes with his or her reputation and work in the world
^ The Ascendant is afflicted; a malefic is rising or the chart ruler may be in close aspect to a malefic, indicating that the person has difficulty "adjusting" to society or may not be able to at all
^ Connections between the Ascendant and the 3rd house; the way this person's mind works interferes with his ability to adapt to everyday life. He also has difficulty expressing his thoughts in a way that others can understand.
^ Mercury is often afflicted by a malefic, especially an outer planet
^ Indications of sexual frustration, inhibition, or transference of sexual values upon other things (art, music, guitar playing, surfing the internet)
^ Jupiter (success) or Venus (money) are often afflicted by Mars, Saturn or Uranus
^ Money is often denied or slow to come. Recognition is hard won if at all. There is a lack of concern for her or his own health, comfort and physical well being that sometimes amounts to shocking negligence, as if s/he were deliberately sacrificing himself or herself for some higher ideal.

[My initial investigation into charts of genius was influenced by the seminal work of Donna Cunningham in her book, "Healing Pluto Problems." I recommend this book highly for work with genius and its issues.]

The charts of mental extremes (genius and low IQ) have have more in common with one another than they do with charts of people who have IQs in the range of 115, for example. The charts are in fact quite similar; however in the charts of geniuses there is a tight grouping of planets and in the case of people with intellectual challenges, the planets are spread. The spread reflects an inability to focus and concentrate that distinguishes them from their odd-man-odd partners, the geniuses.

Because extremes are always rare, it is not usual for either of these types to present themselves for an astrology reading but sometimes they do. Furthermore, an understanding of their charts helps us understand the charts of famous geniuses such as Mozart and Beethoven, which show these characteristics.

The charts of genius will often have a prominent Pluto as well, sometimes through such subtle aspects as parallels and contra-parallels or mutual receptions.

I also see genius in a prominence of the planet Uranus, the sign Aquarius and in 11th house placements. It surprises me how many people have been so brainwashed by teachers (or parents!) who were threatened by their intelligence that they think they are stupid rather than brilliant. Not a few of these people have found their way to astrology readings and began to hear for the first time of their giftedness.

A man who came to me for a reading with a Stellium in Gemini in the 11th house. His father, a Latin and Greek teacher in a village in the Alps, contributed to his feelings of intellectual inferiority by being didactic and really rather insufferable. The son's mind worked so much more quickly that those around him, including his own father, that important others in his life failed to relate to him intellectually at all. It is very healing for an astrologer to be able to point this out, to say the least. This man had very marked intellectual ability and lacked confidence in it. Brilliant people think "differently".

There are more than a few brilliant women who have come to me through the years who were so battered by their husbands that they seriously questioned even their basic intelligence. It is reassuring to consult the astrologer and discover the truth in such matters.

Of course, Uranus rules astrologers and we are a sharp bunch. You'll know that if you set foot in your local astrologers' association meeting. (Did they invent the computer just for us ;-)

Another sign of brilliance can be many sextiles. This is based on harmonics. This harmonic relates to the 3rd and 11th house or Gemini and Aquarian energy.

Well, now you know what to look for, try it out. Let me know how it goes.
